History

The airline traces its origins to Malayan Airways, which was established in 1947 with services connecting Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Ipoh, and Penang. Following the independence of Malaysia and Singapore, the carrier was renamed Malaysia-Singapore Airlines (MSA) in 1966. In 1972, the partnership dissolved, leading to the formation of two separate national carriers: Malaysian Airline System (now Malaysia Airlines) and the newly incorporated Singapore Airlines. Under the leadership of its first managing director, J. Y. Pillay, the airline embarked on an aggressive modernization program, introducing the Boeing 747 and pioneering the "Singapore Girl" branding icon. Key milestones include launching the world's longest non-stop flight between Singapore and Los Angeles in 2004 using the Airbus A340-500, and becoming a founding member of the Star Alliance in 2000. The airline established the low-cost subsidiary Scoot in 2011 to compete in the budget travel segment.

Accidents and incidents

The airline maintains an excellent safety record, with its only fatal accident occurring on October 31, 2000. Singapore Airlines Flight 006, a Boeing 747-400 bound for Los Angeles, crashed during takeoff from Chiang Kai-shek International Airport (now Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport) in Taipei, after mistakenly entering a closed runway under typhoon conditions. The accident resulted in 83 fatalities among the 179 people on board. Investigations by the Aviation Safety Council of Taiwan led to significant changes in the airline's pilot training and airport procedures. Other notable incidents include an in-flight engine shutdown on a Boeing 777-300ER en route to Milan in 2016, and turbulence-related injuries on flights to Mumbai and London.
