History

The current Lufthansa traces its official founding to 1953, initiating scheduled flights in 1955 with a Convair CV-340 from Hamburg to Munich. This marked the rebirth of German civil aviation after the prohibitions following World War II. A pivotal moment was the 1960 order for the Boeing 707, launching its long-haul jet age services to New York City. The airline played a central role in developing Frankfurt Airport into a major European hub and later established a second hub at Munich Airport in the 1990s. Its history is also marked by significant corporate expansion, including the acquisition of a stake in Interflug assets after German reunification and the strategic takeover of Swiss International Air Lines in 2005. The airline faced severe challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to a significant corporate restructuring and a bailout from the German government's Economic Stabilisation Fund.

Fleet

As of recent data, Lufthansa's mainline fleet consists of over 270 aircraft, predominantly from Airbus and Boeing. The Boeing 777X is on order for future delivery. The short- and medium-haul fleet is dominated by the Airbus A320 family, including the fuel-efficient Airbus A320neo and Airbus A321neo. Beyond its passenger airline operations, Lufthansa encompasses a vast array of aviation service companies. Lufthansa Technik provides maintenance, repair, and overhaul services to airlines globally. LSG Sky Chefs is a leading provider of airline catering. Its cargo division, Lufthansa Cargo, operates a dedicated fleet of Boeing 777F freighters. The group also includes training arm Lufthansa Aviation Training and the premium leisure airline Eurowings Discover. Within its passenger services, Lufthansa offers multiple travel classes, including its acclaimed First Class product on certain aircraft, Business Class, and Premium Economy Class.

Accidents and incidents

Lufthansa has maintained a strong safety record throughout its modern history. Its most catastrophic accident was the 1974 crash of Lufthansa Flight 540, a Boeing 747-130, during takeoff from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi, resulting in 59 fatalities. A significant terrorist incident occurred in 1993 with the hijacking of Lufthansa Flight 592, which was resolved in New York City. In 1993, a landing accident involving an Airbus A320 at Warsaw Chopin Airport led to two fatalities and raised questions about aircraft automation. More recently, in 2023, a serious incident involving Lufthansa Flight 469 encountered severe turbulence over the Tennessee region, causing injuries.
