The 129th Rescue Wing operates from Moffett Federal Airfield in Mountain View, specializing in combat search and rescue. Other significant installations are the 146th Airlift Wing at Channel Islands Air National Guard Station near Oxnard and the 195th Wing at Beale Air Force Base. Support units, such as the 261st Cyber Operations Unit, are distributed across the state, including facilities in Los Alamitos and Camp San Luis Obispo.

Missions and operations

Its federal mission encompasses worldwide deployment in support of United States Air Force objectives, including aerial refueling, airlift operations, fighter and remotely piloted aircraft missions, and intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance. Units have consistently deployed to locations like Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar and Bagram Airfield in Afghanistan for operations Enduring Freedom and Inherent Resolve. The state mission involves responding to governor-declared emergencies, such as providing C-130 Hercules aircraft for wildfire suppression, helicopter support for search and rescue during floods, and KC-135 Stratotanker crews for COVID-19 pandemic logistics under Defense Support of Civil Authorities protocols.

Aircraft

The inventory features a diverse fleet tailored to unit missions. Fighter and attack capabilities are provided by the F-15C Eagle and the MQ-9 Reaper. Airlift is conducted using the C-130J Super Hercules, while the KC-135 Stratotanker fulfills the aerial refueling role. Specialized platforms include the HC-130J Combat King II and HH-60G Pave Hawk helicopters operated by the 129th Rescue Wing for long-range rescue missions. Previous generations of aircraft flown include the F-4 Phantom II, the F-106 Delta Dart, and the C-7 Caribou.

Distinguished members include General Larry O. Spencer, who served as Vice Chief of Staff of the United States Air Force. Brigadier General John I. Pray Jr. served as Commander of the Air National Guard Readiness Center. The astronaut James McDivitt served as a fighter pilot in the organization before joining NASA and commanding the Gemini 4 and Apollo 9 missions. Medal of Honor recipient Louis J. Sebille was a posthumous honoree for actions during the Korean War. Former United States Senator Barry Goldwater served as a pilot and officer in a predecessor unit during the 1930s.
