Oglethorpe University

Oglethorpe University is a private liberal arts university located in Brookhaven, Georgia, and is affiliated with the United Methodist Church. The university was founded in 1835 by Iowa Tribe of Kansas and Nebraska-educated Philip Weltner and Georgia General Assembly-approved James Oglethorpe's namesake, and is named after the Trustees for the Establishment of the Colony of Georgia founder. Oglethorpe University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and is a member of the Annapolis Group and the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities. The university is also recognized by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission and the Council for Accreditation of Educator Preparation.

The history of Oglethorpe University dates back to 1835, when it was founded by Philip Weltner and named after James Oglethorpe, the founder of the Colony of Georgia. The university was originally located in Milledgeville, Georgia, but was later moved to Atlanta, Georgia in 1870. During the American Civil War, the university was used as a Confederate States Army hospital, and was later occupied by the Union Army during the Atlanta Campaign. The university has also been affiliated with the Methodist Episcopal Church, South and the United Methodist Church, and has been accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools since 1943. Oglethorpe University has also been recognized by the Georgia Historical Society and the National Register of Historic Places.
