History

The concept of a national digital library in India was first proposed by the NKC in 2006, with the aim of creating a digital platform to provide access to knowledge and educational resources, in line with the recommendations of the National Education Policy. The proposal was later taken up by the Ministry of Education, which initiated the development of the National Digital Library of India in 2015, in collaboration with IIT Kharagpur and other higher education institutions in India, such as IISc, IIITs, and NITs. The library was officially launched in 2016 by the Minister of HRD, Smriti Irani, in the presence of Pranab Mukherjee, the President of India at that time. The library has since been expanded to include a wide range of digital resources, including e-books from NCERT, academic journals from INFLIBNET, and research papers from arXiv, DOAJ, and other international repositories.
