Yonsei University is a prestigious private research university in Seoul, South Korea, and a founding member of the nation's "SKY" universities. It traces its origins to Gwanghyewon, the first modern hospital in Korea founded in 1885 by Horace Newton Allen of the Northern Presbyterian Church. The modern institution was formed in 1957 through the merger of Yonhi College and Severance Union Medical College, creating a comprehensive university with strengths in medicine, theology, and the liberal arts.

History

The university's lineage begins with the 1885 establishment of Gwanghyewon by medical missionary Horace Newton Allen, which later became Severance Hospital. The educational foundation was laid with the 1915 founding of Chosen Christian College by Horace Grant Underwood, which was renamed Yonhi College after World War II. Concurrently, Severance Union Medical College developed from the medical mission. Following the Korean War, these two institutions merged in 1957 under the name Yonsei, derived from the first syllables of Yonhi and Severance. The university played a significant role during the democratization of South Korea, with its students actively participating in protests against the Fifth Republic.

Campus

The primary campus is located in Sinchon-dong, Seodaemun District, a vibrant district in western Seoul known for its youthful energy and proximity to Hongik University. This historic campus features landmarks like the Underwood and Appenzeller Halls, the modern Centennial Library, and the Yonsei University Museum. Since 2010, the university has operated the state-of-the-art International Campus in Songdo International Business District in Incheon, which hosts several graduate schools and residential colleges. The university's health system is anchored by the Severance Hospital complex in Sinchon.

Academics

Yonsei is organized into over twenty colleges and graduate schools, including the College of Medicine, the College of Theology, and the renowned College of Business. Student life

Campus life is defined by a dynamic tradition of rivalry with nearby Korea University, culminating in the annual Yonsei–Korea University athletics competition. The university hosts over 500 student clubs, including the prestigious a cappella group and the student-run newspaper, The Yonsei Annals. Major annual events include the Akaraka festival and the baseball games at Jamsil Baseball Stadium. The university's athletic teams, the Yonsei Eagles, compete in the U-League.
