Xi'an Metro

Xi'an Metro. The rapid transit system serving the Xi'an metropolitan area in Shaanxi province, China. It is a critical component of the city's public transportation network, facilitating movement within the ancient capital and connecting to major hubs like Xi'an Xianyang International Airport and the Xi'an railway station. Since its opening, the system has grown to become one of the busiest in Northwest China, integrating modern infrastructure with the region's profound historical heritage.

History

Planning for a modern rail transit system in Xi'an began in the early 21st century, with official approval from the National Development and Reform Commission granted in 2006. Construction on the initial lines commenced shortly thereafter, overcoming challenges related to the preservation of the city's numerous archaeological sites, including areas near the Ming dynasty city wall. The first revenue service, on Line 2, opened on 16 September 2011, connecting the North railway station to the Beilin District. Subsequent expansions have been rapid, with new lines and extensions opening consistently, often timed to coincide with major municipal events or to serve new developments like the Xi'an High-tech Zone.

Network

The network consists of nine operational lines, spanning over 311 kilometers and serving 203 stations. Line 1 runs east-west, linking Fenghe Forest Park to Fangzhicheng, while the north-south Line 2 is a primary artery intersecting with Line 1 at Bei Da Jie station. Line 3 serves the southwestern quadrant, and Line 4 is a major northeast-southwest route connecting the Xi'an North railway station high-speed rail hub to the Daming Palace National Heritage Park area. Other lines include Line 5, Line 6, Line 9, the Airport line, and the Line 14 airport express, which provides a direct, high-speed link to Xi'an Xianyang International Airport. Key interchange stations include Wulukou, Tonghuamen, and Daxiaozhai.

Operations

Daily service typically begins around 6:00 AM and concludes after midnight, with frequencies varying by line and time of day. The system is operated by the Xi'an Rail Transit Group Co., Ltd., which manages fare collection, station maintenance, and passenger safety. Fares are distance-based, utilizing contactless smart cards or mobile payment systems like WeChat Pay. Major stations are equipped with comprehensive passenger amenities and are designed to handle large volumes of tourists, particularly those visiting landmarks such as the Terracotta Army exhibition areas and the Bell Tower. Security protocols are coordinated with the Xi'an Municipal Public Security Bureau.

Rolling stock

The fleet primarily consists of six-car Type A and Type B rapid transit trainsets. Major suppliers include CRRC Changchun Railway Vehicles and CRRC Qingdao Sifang, with different lines featuring distinct livery and interior designs. For example, trains on the Airport line offer enhanced luggage space, while those on Line 14 are configured for higher speeds. The trains operate on standard gauge track and are powered via a 1500V overhead catenary system. Maintenance is performed at several depots, including the Weiqu depot and the Hanyuan depot.

Future expansion

An extensive expansion plan is outlined in the city's urban rail transit master plan, with several lines under active construction. Line 8 is a key circular route that will connect multiple suburban districts and existing interchange stations. Additional phases for Line 10, Line 15, and Line 16 are also planned to extend service to new areas like the Xi'an Economic and Technological Development Zone and further integrate with the national China Railway High-speed network at major terminals. These projects are subject to approvals from the National Development and Reform Commission and aim to support the growth of the Guanzhong Plain urban agglomeration.
