Xi'an Railway Station

Xi'an Railway Station. It is a major railway hub in northwestern China, operated by China Railway Xi'an Group. Located just outside the historic Xi'an city wall, it serves as a critical junction for conventional rail lines, connecting the city to national networks. The station handles a vast volume of passenger traffic, providing essential links to destinations across Shaanxi province and beyond.

History

The station's origins trace back to the Longhai railway, with initial construction beginning in 1934 during the Republican era. Its strategic importance grew significantly after the founding of the People's Republic of China, becoming a central node for developing Northwest China's rail infrastructure. A major reconstruction project was undertaken from 1984 to 1990, dramatically expanding its capacity to accommodate increasing traffic from lines like the Xi'an–Baoji railway and the Xi'an–Yan'an railway. The station underwent another comprehensive renovation and expansion starting in 2019, modernizing its facilities while preserving its iconic architectural facade, and fully reopened in 2021 to better integrate with the city's modern Xi'an Metro system and the high-speed services at Xi'an North railway station.

Architecture and facilities

The station's most distinctive feature is its grand Tang dynasty-inspired main building, featuring traditional dougong brackets and a sweeping grey-tiled roof, symbolizing Xi'an's ancient heritage. The complex includes a vast central waiting hall, separate waiting areas for soft-seat and hard-seat passengers, and numerous commercial amenities. Following its latest renovation, the station now features elevated pedestrian corridors, underground passageways, and direct transfers to Metro Line 4 and Metro Line 7. The station yard was reconfigured to include nine island platforms serving sixteen tracks, with covered canopies and modernized signaling systems controlled by the China Railway Signal and Communication Corporation.

Services and operations

As a primary conventional rail terminal, the station operates numerous direct passenger services to major cities across China, including Beijing West, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Ürümqi, and Lhasa via the Qinghai–Tibet railway. It is the main departure point for regional trains across Shaanxi, serving key locations like Yan'an, Baoji, Ankang, and Tongchuan. The station manages a mix of CRH conventional-speed bullet trains on shorter routes, along with traditional green-painted trains and direct express services. Operations are coordinated by dispatchers from the China Railway Xi'an Group, with security managed by the Xi'an Railway Public Security Bureau.

Transportation connections

The station is a central multimodal transit hub. Direct underground access connects to the Xi'an Metro network via its namesake metro station. The adjacent **Xi'an Bus Terminal** offers extensive regional and long-distance coach services to destinations throughout the province, including the Terracotta Army site in Lintong District. Multiple city bus lines and taxi stands on **Huancheng North Road** provide convenient dispersal. The station's location just north of the Xi'an city wall offers pedestrian access to the city center, the Bell Tower, and the Beilin Museum, with the high-speed rail hub at Xi'an North railway station accessible via Metro Line 4.

Future development

Future plans focus on optimizing its role within the national **"Eight Vertical and Eight Horizontal"** high-speed rail network, enhancing coordination with Xi'an North railway station and the newer Xi'an East railway station. Proposed integration includes more seamless passenger transfer corridors and unified ticketing systems managed by China Railway 12306. Urban development initiatives led by the Xi'an Municipal Government aim to further upgrade the surrounding **"Station North Square"** district, improving traffic flow and commercial space. The station is also slated to play a supporting role for increased tourist traffic generated by landmarks like the Shaanxi History Museum and the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda, reinforcing Xi'an's status as a central cultural and logistical gateway to the Silk Road Economic Belt.
