Willie Geist is an American television host, journalist, and author known for his roles on NBC and MSNBC. He is the co-host of the third hour of Today and a longtime co-host of the weekday morning talk and news program Morning Joe. Geist has also contributed to NBC Sports coverage of major events like the Olympic Games and the Kentucky Derby.

Early life and education

Willie Geist was born in Evanston, Illinois, the son of journalist and author Bill Geist. He grew up in New Jersey and attended Delbarton School in Morristown. For his higher education, Geist enrolled at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, where he graduated with a degree in English studies. During his time at Vanderbilt University, he wrote for the student newspaper, The Vanderbilt Hustler, and developed an early interest in media and political communication.

Career

Geist began his professional career in New York City as a production assistant for CBS News on the program CBS This Morning. He later worked as a segment producer for CNN's American Morning before joining MSNBC in 2005. At MSNBC, Geist became a regular panelist and substitute host on Morning Joe, eventually being named a permanent co-host alongside Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski. In 2012, he began hosting the Sunday morning talk show Way Too Early with Willie Geist. His role expanded within the NBCUniversal family when he was named co-host of the third hour of Today in 2016, sharing the desk with Dylan Dreyer and Al Roker. Geist has served as a special correspondent for NBC Sports, contributing to broadcasts of the Super Bowl, the Olympic Games, and the Tour de France. Geist married Christina (Shinaberry) Geist in 2003; she is a former brand manager for Ralph Lauren and an author. The couple resides in New York City with their two children. He is an avid sports fan, particularly of the Chicago Bears, Chicago Bulls, and St. Louis Cardinals. Geist has participated in charity events for organizations like the Robin Hood Foundation and the Michael J. Fox Foundation.
