Morristown, New Jersey. Morristown is the county seat of Morris County, New Jersey and holds a prominent place in American history as a strategic military headquarters during the American Revolutionary War. Located approximately 30 miles west of New York City, it is a commercial and cultural hub for the region, known for its historic districts, corporate offices, and vibrant downtown centered on the Morristown Green. History

The area was originally inhabited by the Lenape people before European settlement began in the early 18th century. Its strategic inland location and resources led George Washington and the Continental Army to choose it for winter encampments during the American Revolutionary War, notably in the winters of 1777 and 1779-80 at the Ford Mansion and Jockey Hollow. This period earned it the nickname "Military Capital of the American Revolution." In the 19th century, it became a transportation and industrial center with the arrival of the Morris Canal and the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad. The town was incorporated in 1865 and later became a center for the Bell System with the presence of AT&T's corporate research and manufacturing facilities. Historic sites are preserved as part of the Morristown National Historical Park, the first such park in the National Park Service system.

Geography

It lies within the Piedmont region of New Jersey, with the Whippany River flowing along its eastern border. The topography is characterized by rolling hills and valleys. The town's central core is organized around the historic Morristown Green, a two-acre public park that serves as a geographic and civic focal point.

The racial and ethnic composition is diverse, with significant populations identifying as Hispanic or Latino, White, Asian, and African American. The town is part of the New York metropolitan area and serves as a residential community for commuters to New York City and other regional employment centers.

Government

Morristown operates under a Mayor-Council form of government under the Faulkner Act. The municipal government consists of a Mayor and a seven-member Town Council elected at-large. The current mayor is Timothy Dougherty. The town provides full municipal services, including its own police department and department of public works. As the county seat, it houses the main administrative offices and courts for Morris County, New Jersey, including the Morris County Courthouse. The town is part of New Jersey's 11th congressional district, represented in the United States House of Representatives by Mikie Sherrill.
