The Force Awakens is a 2015 American epic space opera film directed, co-produced, and co-written by J. J. Abrams. The seventh installment in the main Star Wars film series, it is set approximately 30 years after the events of Return of the Jedi (1983) and features new characters alongside returning figures from the original trilogy. The film follows Rey, Finn, and Poe Dameron as they are drawn into the conflict between the Resistance, led by Leia Organa, and the First Order, a tyrannical regime that has risen from the fallen Galactic Empire.

Plot

On the desert planet Jakku, Resistance pilot Poe Dameron receives a map fragment leading to the missing Luke Skywalker from the elderly Lor San Tekka. First Order forces, commanded by Kylo Ren, attack the village, capturing Poe but his droid, BB-8, escapes with the data. Ren, the son of Leia Organa and Han Solo, is a powerful practitioner of the dark side of the Force under the guidance of the mysterious Supreme Leader Snoke. A defecting First Order stormtrooper, FN-2187 (Finn), helps Poe escape, and they crash on Jakku, where Finn encounters the scavenger Rey and BB-8. Pursued by the First Order, they flee the planet in the salvaged Millennium Falcon, only to be captured by its former owners, Han Solo and Chewbacca.

The group travels to Maz Kanata's castle on Takodana, where Rey is drawn to Luke Skywalker's lightsaber and experiences a traumatic vision. The First Order attacks, capturing Rey and destroying the Hosnian system with their superweapon, Starkiller Base. On the Resistance base on D'Qar, Leia reunites with Han and Chewbacca. A Resistance strike team, including Han, Finn, and Chewbacca, infiltrates Starkiller Base to disable its shields. Han confronts his son, Kylo Ren, on a walkway, but Ren kills him, further cementing his fall to the dark side. Rey, having escaped captivity using the Force, duels Ren in the snowy forest, calling Skywalker's lightsaber to her hand. As the Resistance destroys Starkiller Base, Rey and Chewbacca depart in the Falcon to find the remote planet of Ahch-To, where she presents the lightsaber to the exiled Luke Skywalker.

Production

Development began in 2012 after The Walt Disney Company acquired Lucasfilm and announced a new trilogy. Original creator George Lucas provided story treatments, which were largely set aside. Michael Arndt was initially hired to write the screenplay, but J. J. Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan took over writing duties in late 2013, with Abrams also directing. Principal photography commenced in April 2014 at Pinewood Studios and on location in Abu Dhabi, Iceland, and Ireland. Abrams utilized a combination of practical effects, creature work, and real sets, overseen by veteran Star Wars designers like Roger Christian, to evoke the aesthetic of the original trilogy. John Williams returned to compose the score, introducing new themes for characters like Rey and Kylo Ren.

Release

The world premiere was held at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood on December 14, 2015. The film received a wide theatrical release in North America on December 18, 2015, by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. It was accompanied by a massive marketing campaign and extensive merchandising. The film was later released in various IMAX and 3D formats. Its home media release in April 2016 set digital sales records.

Reception

The film received generally positive reviews from critics, who praised its cast, direction, visual effects, musical score, and emotional resonance, though some noted narrative similarities to Star Wars (1977). It broke numerous box office records, including the biggest opening weekend in North America and the fastest film to gross $1 billion worldwide. It ultimately grossed over $2 billion globally, becoming the highest-grossing film in North America at the time (unadjusted for inflation). It received five Academy Award nominations, including for John Williams' score and visual effects, and won several Saturn Awards.
