Production and development

The filming model was constructed from a kit for a ILM model, giving it its distinctive shape. Its "used future" look was achieved through detailed weathering and ad-hoc modifications, a directive from George Lucas to contrast with the sleek Imperial technology. For the special edition re-releases and the prequel trilogy, the model was updated with CGI by Lucasfilm. In the sequel trilogy, both practical sets and advanced computer-generated imagery were used to recreate the interior and exterior for a new generation of films under Walt Disney Pictures.
