Nikos Michaloliakos

He pursued higher education at the National Technical University of Athens, where he studied mathematics but did not complete his degree, focusing instead on his burgeoning extremist activities. His formative years were heavily influenced by the post-junta political climate and the emergence of fringe ultranationalist groups in Greece.

Political career

His political career began in earnest in the late 1970s. He founded the nucleus of what would become Golden Dawn in 1980, modeling it on Nazi ideology and imagery. The group initially operated as a marginal extremist faction, publishing a newspaper also named Golden Dawn and engaging in street-level activism and violence. Following the political upheaval of the Greek government-debt crisis, the party achieved unprecedented electoral success, entering the Hellenic Parliament in 2012 after winning seats in the June 2012 elections. He served as a Member of Parliament for the Athens B electoral district, using the platform to promote his party's agenda until its collapse following the criminal convictions.

Legal issues and convictions

His legal troubles escalated dramatically following the 2013 murder of Pavlos Fyssas by a Golden Dawn associate. In 2014, he was arrested and charged, alongside dozens of other party members, with directing a criminal organization. After a historic, five-year trial—one of the largest in modern Greek history—the Three-member Court of Appeals of Athens convicted him in October 2020. He was found guilty of leading a criminal organization, as well as complicity in serious crimes including murder, assault, and illegal weapons possession related to attacks on left-wing activists and immigrants. He was sentenced to 13 years and 6 months imprisonment and is currently incarcerated in Korydallos Prison.

Ideology and political views

His ideology is explicitly neo-Nazi, ultranationalist, and xenophobic. He has publicly expressed admiration for Adolf Hitler and the Third Reich, and his rhetoric consistently denies the Holocaust. The ideology of Golden Dawn, under his leadership, combined violent ethnic nationalism, anti-communism, anti-immigration, and a belief in a racially pure Greece. His views were disseminated through the party's publications and speeches, often invoking ancient Greek symbols in a distorted manner to support a narrative of racial superiority and confrontation with perceived enemies like Turkey, globalism, and parliamentary democracy.

Little is widely documented about his personal life outside of his political activities. He is married and has children. His wife, Eleni Zaroulia, was also a prominent member and MEP for Golden Dawn. His complete dedication to his extremist cause has defined his adult life, with his personal and political identities being largely inseparable. His current existence is defined by his imprisonment in Korydallos Prison, following the definitive rulings of the Greek judicial system.
