Third Reich was the common name for the regime that governed Germany from 1933 to 1945 under the totalitarian dictatorship of Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party. It was characterized by its virulent ideology of racial supremacy, aggressive expansionism, and the systematic persecution and genocide of millions, most notably during the Holocaust. The regime's actions precipitated World War II, leading to a catastrophic global conflict that ended with its military defeat by the Allies and the subsequent Occupation of Germany.

Etymology and terminology

The term "Third Reich" translates to "Third Empire" or "Third Realm," a concept popularized by Arthur Moeller van den Bruck in his 1923 book *Das Dritte Reich*. This terminology framed the regime as the successor to the medieval Holy Roman Empire (the First Reich) and the modern German Empire (the Second Reich) under Otto von Bismarck and Wilhelm II. Official propaganda, managed by figures like Joseph Goebbels at the Ministry of Public Enlightenment and Propaganda, heavily promoted this historical continuity. However, after the Anschluss with Austria in 1938, the state was increasingly referred to as the Greater German Reich, a name formally adopted in 1943.

History

The regime began with Hitler's appointment as Chancellor of Germany by President Paul von Hindenburg on January 30, 1933, following electoral gains by the Nazi Party. Key events consolidating power included the Reichstag Fire, the subsequent Reichstag Fire Decree, and the Enabling Act of 1933, which granted Hitler dictatorial authority. The Night of the Long Knives in 1934 purged the Sturmabteilung leadership, cementing control by the Schutzstaffel under Heinrich Himmler. Foreign policy was marked by remilitarization, such as the reoccupation of the Rhineland, and territorial expansion through the Anschluss, the Munich Agreement ceding the Sudetenland, and the invasion of Poland in 1939, which triggered World War II.
