The government was formally proclaimed in 5 ABY, marking the beginning of the New Republic Era, and faced the immense challenges of rebuilding galactic civilization, demilitarizing, and confronting Imperial remnants.

History

The foundation was declared by the Declaration of a New Republic following pivotal victories such as the Battle of Jakku. Key early actions included the signing of the Galactic Concordance, which formally ended the Galactic Civil War, and the Great Peace. The government initially established its capital on Chandrila, the homeworld of Mon Mothma, before implementing a rotating capital system. This period saw the Imperial Remnant driven into the Unknown Regions, eventually coalescing into the First Order. Political challenges included the Centrist and Populist factions in the Senate, which often gridlocked over military policy. The revelations about Darth Vader being Leia Organa's father led to the Populists discrediting her and spurring her to form the Resistance. The New Republic's complacency was shattered when the First Order, using the Starkiller Base, destroyed the Hosnian system in 34 ABY, decapitating its government and fleet in the Hosnian Cataclysm.
