The planet is a central hub for galactic governance, finance, and intrigue, featuring prominently across the Star Wars saga in films, television series, and Expanded Universe literature.

The entire surface is covered by a single, sprawling urban landscape, with buildings stretching kilometers into the sky. Key architectural landmarks include the massive Senate Building, the ancient Jedi Temple, and the opulent Imperial Palace, which was later repurposed as the New Republic Senate.
