The institution was originally chartered in 1887 by the Reformed Presbyterian Church of North America as the Cedarville Academy, opening its doors in 1894 with support from local pastor Francis A. Patterson. In 1953, facing financial difficulties, the academy was gifted to the Baptist Bible Institute of Cleveland, which transformed it into a four-year liberal arts college. Under the leadership of President James T. Jeremiah, the college saw significant growth and officially became Cedarville University in 2002.
