Background

Following their decisive victory at the Battle of Yavin, the Alliance to Restore the Republic entered a period of flight and regrouping under relentless pursuit by the Galactic Empire. After abandoning their base on Yavin 4, the Alliance sought a new, remote location to establish a permanent headquarters, eventually selecting the desolate ice world of Hoth in the Anoat sector. Under the command of Carlist Rieekan, the Rebels constructed Echo Base within the glacial mountains, utilizing its harsh climate and sensor-scattering ionosphere as natural defenses. Meanwhile, Darth Vader, obsessed with finding Luke Skywalker and crushing the Rebellion, relentlessly scoured the Outer Rim Territories with his formidable Death Squadron.

Prelude

The Empire's discovery of Echo Base was precipitated by a routine Imperial probe droid, which transmitted confirmation of the base's location before being destroyed by Han Solo. Despite this warning, Alliance High Command deemed an immediate evacuation impossible due to the time required to activate the base's powerful ion cannon and prepare the transport fleet. Darth Vader's fleet, including his flagship Executor, arrived at the edge of the Hoth system, where Admiral Ozzel's tactical error of emerging from lightspeed too close to the planet alerted the Rebels. On the surface, Han Solo and Leia Organa orchestrated the evacuation from the command center, escaping aboard the Millennium Falcon just before the base fell. The ion cannon provided critical cover, disabling Imperial Star Destroyers to allow the GR-75 transports to jump to lightspeed.
