The city is situated near the Illinois Prairie Path and is home to Wheaton College, a Christian college founded in 1860 by Jonathan Blanchard. Wheaton is also the county seat of DuPage County, Illinois and is near the Kane County, Illinois border. The city is close to Aurora, Illinois, Naperville, Illinois, and Glen Ellyn, Illinois.

History

The history of Wheaton, Illinois dates back to the early 19th century, when the area was first settled by European-American pioneers, including Erastus Gary and Warren L. Wheaton. The city was officially incorporated in 1859 and was named after Warren L. Wheaton, a Prominent citizen of the area. Wheaton played an important role in the American Civil War, with many of its residents serving in the Union Army. The city is also home to the Cosley Zoo, which was founded in 1974 and is located on the grounds of the DuPage County Forest Preserve.
