Wantagh, New York is a hamlet and census-designated place located in Nassau County on Long Island, near Hempstead and Freeport. Geography

History

The area that is now Wantagh was originally inhabited by the Matinecock Native American tribe, who were part of the Algonquian language and culture group. In the 17th century, the area was settled by English colonists, who established farms and trading posts in the area. Wantagh was named after the Matinecock Native American tribe leader Chief Tackapousha, who was a prominent figure in the area during the 17th century. The community was also home to the Wantagh Presbyterian Church, which was established in 1697 and is one of the oldest Presbyterian churches in the United States. During the American Revolution, Wantagh was a key location for Continental Army troops, who used the area as a staging ground for attacks on British Army forces in New York City.
