Singapore National Research Foundation. The Singapore National Research Foundation is a department within the Prime Minister's Office (Singapore) that aims to develop Singapore into a knowledge-based economy by supporting research and development in Biotechnology, Physical sciences, Engineering, and Social sciences. It works closely with National University of Singapore, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore Management University, and Singapore University of Technology and Design to promote Innovation and Entrepreneurship. The foundation also collaborates with Agence Nationale de la Recherche, Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, and National Science Foundation to advance Scientific research and Technological innovation.

Introduction

The Singapore National Research Foundation was established to drive Economic growth and Job creation in Singapore by leveraging Science and technology. It focuses on developing Research infrastructure and Human capital in key areas such as Nanotechnology, Information technology, and Biomedical engineering. The foundation works with A*STAR, Economic Development Board (Singapore), and Infocomm Media Development Authority to support Startups and Small and medium-sized enterprises in Singapore. It also partners with Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford University, and University of California, Berkeley to promote International collaboration and Knowledge transfer.

History

The Singapore National Research Foundation was set up in 2006 as part of the Prime Minister's Office (Singapore)'s efforts to develop Singapore into a Global hub for Science and technology. The foundation's establishment was announced by Lee Hsien Loong, the Prime Minister of Singapore, during the National Day Rally in 2006. Since its inception, the foundation has worked with National Research Council (United States), European Research Council, and Australian Research Council to advance Scientific research and Innovation in Singapore. It has also collaborated with World Health Organization, United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, and International Council for Science to address Global challenges such as Climate change and Pandemics.

Research Initiatives

The Singapore National Research Foundation supports various Research initiatives in Singapore, including the National Research Fund, Research Centres of Excellence, and Corporate Laboratories. These initiatives focus on developing Cutting-edge technologies and Innovative solutions in areas such as Artificial intelligence, Cybersecurity, and Sustainable energy. The foundation also works with Defense Science and Technology Agency, Ministry of Health (Singapore), and National Environment Agency (Singapore) to support Research and development in Defense technology, Biomedical research, and Environmental science. It partners with Harvard University, University of Oxford, and University of Cambridge to advance Interdisciplinary research and Collaboration.

Organisation and Governance

The Singapore National Research Foundation is led by a Board of Directors comprising prominent Scientists, Engineers, and Industry leaders from Singapore and around the world. The foundation's Secretariat is responsible for the day-to-day operations and Program management. It works closely with Ministry of Education (Singapore), Ministry of Trade and Industry (Singapore), and Ministry of Communications and Information (Singapore) to align its Research initiatives with National priorities and Economic strategies. The foundation also collaborates with International organizations such as Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, World Bank, and Asian Development Bank to advance Global cooperation and Knowledge sharing.

The Singapore National Research Foundation provides Funding for various Research programs and Initiatives in Singapore. These include the National Research Fund, Research Centres of Excellence, and Corporate Laboratories.
