Silver Spring, Maryland is an unincorporated community in Montgomery County, located near Washington, D.C., Takoma Park, and Wheaton. The area is home to numerous NIH facilities, including the NCI and the NIMH, as well as the FDA and the NOAA. Silver Spring is also close to the University of Maryland, Gallaudet University, and Howard University.

Geography

Silver Spring is situated near the Anacostia River and the Northwest Branch Anacostia River, and is bordered by Chevy Chase to the southwest, Takoma Park to the east, and Wheaton to the north. The area is also close to the Sligo Creek Trail, which connects to the Anacostia Tributary Trail System and the Capital Crescent Trail. Silver Spring is near the National Mall, the United States Capitol, and the White House, and is accessible via the Capital Beltway and the I-495. The area is also home to the Wheaton Regional Park, which features the Brookside Gardens and the Wheaton Ice Arena.

History

The area now known as Silver Spring was originally settled by the Piscataway people, an Algonquian-speaking tribe, and was later colonized by European-Americans in the 18th century. The area was named after a mica-filled spring discovered by Francis Preston Blair, a journalist and politician who was a close friend of Andrew Jackson and Abraham Lincoln. During the American Civil War, the area was a key location for the Union Army, with nearby Fort Stevens and Fort Totten playing important roles in the Battle of Fort Stevens. Silver Spring was also home to the B&O Railroad, which connected the area to Baltimore and Washington, D.C., and was a major transportation hub during the Industrial Revolution.

As of the 2020 census, the population of Silver Spring was approximately 71,449, with a diverse population that includes residents from El Salvador, Ethiopia, Ghana, and Haiti. The area is also home to a large Jewish community, with numerous synagogues and Jewish organizations, including the Jewish Community Center of Greater Washington and the B'nai B'rith International. Silver Spring is also close to the National Naval Medical Center, the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, and the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences.
