Geography

History

The history of Reston, Virginia dates back to the 18th century, when the area was part of the Loudoun County, Virginia and was home to several plantations, including the Carter's Grove Plantation and the Gunston Hall. In the 19th century, the area was a major producer of tobacco and wheat, with many farms and mills operating in the region, similar to those found in Lancaster, Pennsylvania and Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. The community was founded in 1964 by Robert E. Simon, who envisioned a planned community that would provide a high quality of life for its residents, similar to Columbia, Maryland and The Woodlands, Texas. Reston was designed to be a self-contained community, with its own shopping centers, parks, and recreational facilities, including the Reston National Golf Course and the Washington and Old Dominion Railroad Trail.
