Liberal International

Liberal International is a global federation of liberal political parties and organizations, including the Democratic Party of the United States, the Liberal Party of Canada, and the Free Democratic Party of Germany. The organization was founded in 1947 by Johann Heinrich and Ricardo López Murphy of the Radical Civic Union of Argentina, with the aim of promoting liberal democracy and human rights worldwide, in collaboration with the United Nations, the European Union, and the Council of Europe. Liberal International has its headquarters in London, United Kingdom, and is a member of the International Democrat Union, alongside the Christian Democrat Organization of America and the European People's Party.

The history of Liberal International dates back to the post-World War II era, when Winston Churchill, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Joseph Stalin met at the Yalta Conference to discuss the future of Europe and the world. The organization was formally established in 1947, with the participation of political parties from Europe, North America, and South America, including the Liberal Party of the United Kingdom, the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada, and the Republican Party of the United States. Over the years, Liberal International has played a significant role in promoting democratization and human rights in various regions, including Eastern Europe during the Cold War, in collaboration with the European Court of Human Rights and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe. The current President of Liberal International is Hakima El Haite, a Moroccan politician and former Minister of Environment of Morocco. Previous presidents of the organization include John Alderdice, a British politician and former Speaker of the Northern Ireland Assembly, and Annemie Neyts-Uyttebroeck, a Belgian politician and former Member of the European Parliament. Other notable presidents of Liberal International include Giovanni Malagodi, an Italian politician and former President of the Italian Liberal Party, and Uffe Ellemann-Jensen, a Danish politician and former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Denmark, who have all played important roles in shaping the organization's policies and activities, in collaboration with the United Nations, the European Union, and the Council of Europe.
