Joseph Kennedy III

Joseph Kennedy III is an American politician who served as the U.S. Representative for Massachusetts's 4th congressional district from 2013 to 2021. He is a member of the prominent Kennedy family, the grandson of Robert F. Kennedy and the great-nephew of John F. Kennedy and Ted Kennedy. Kennedy III was born in Boston, Massachusetts, and grew up in Brighton, Massachusetts, and Cambridge, Massachusetts, attending Noble and Greenough School and later Stanford University, where he earned a degree in Management Science and Engineering. In 2012, Kennedy III announced his candidacy for the U.S. House of Representatives in Massachusetts's 4th congressional district, running against Sean Bielat and David Steinhof. Kennedy III won the election with the support of Barney Frank, John Kerry, and Ted Kennedy's widow, Vicki Kennedy. He was also endorsed by the Boston Globe, the Boston Herald, and the New York Times.

Kennedy III was sworn into office on January 3, 2013, and served as the U.S. Representative for Massachusetts's 4th congressional district until January 3, 2021. During his time in office, Kennedy III was a member of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce and the House Committee on Foreign Affairs. He also served as the chair of the New Democrat Coalition and was a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus. He ran against Ed Markey, who was endorsed by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Bernie Sanders, and Elizabeth Warren. Kennedy III was endorsed by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Congressman Stephen Lynch. Despite his family's legacy and his own experience in the U.S. House of Representatives, Kennedy III lost the election to Ed Markey in the Democratic primary. Kennedy III conceded the election on September 1, 2020, and Ed Markey went on to win the general election against Kevin O'Connor.
