History

The area now known as Darien, Connecticut was originally settled in 1641 by Thomas Stanton, an English colonist, and was later purchased from the Sachem of the Siwanoy tribe, Wascussee. The town was officially incorporated in 1820 and was named after Darien, Panama, a town in Panama that was an important stopover for Spanish explorers, including Vasco Nunez de Balboa and Ferdinand Magellan. During the American Revolution, Darien was a key location for American forces, with George Washington and Nathan Hale both passing through the area. The town's history is also tied to the Underground Railroad, with Harriet Tubman and Frederick Douglass both having connections to the area, similar to New Haven, Connecticut and Hartford, Connecticut.
