Charleston, West Virginia is a city located in the Appalachian region, situated at the confluence of the Kanawha and Elk Rivers, near the New River. The city is home to the West Virginia State Capitol building, designed by Cass Gilbert and Hancock County native Franklin D. Roosevelt, and features a distinctive Golden Dome. Charleston is also close to the Kanawha River Valley, which has been influenced by the Ohio River Valley and the Great Smoky Mountains.

Geography
