Bassett Medical Center was founded in 1922 by Mary Imogene Bassett, a Physician and Public health advocate, with the support of George F. Johnson and the Endicott-Johnson Corporation. The medical center has a long history of providing Medical education and Residency training programs, including those affiliated with Harvard Medical School and University of Rochester Medical Center. Over the years, Bassett Medical Center has expanded its services and facilities, including the addition of a Cardiac catheterization lab and a Radiation oncology department, and has become a major employer in Otsego County, New York, along with Clark Foundation and New York State Historical Association. The medical center has also collaborated with other institutions, such as Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center and University of Vermont Medical Center, on various Clinical trials and Research studies.

Bassett Medical Center has also invested in Telemedicine technology, allowing patients to receive care remotely, in partnership with American Telemedicine Association and Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society.
