Xidian University

Xidian University. It is a major public research university in China, renowned for its focus on electronics and information technology. Founded in 1931, it is a key member of both the national Project 211 and the Double First Class University Plan. The university operates two main campuses in Xi'an and a newer campus in Guangzhou.

History

The institution was originally established in 1931 in Ruijin, Jiangxi, as the Radio School of the Chinese Red Army, playing a crucial role during the Second Sino-Japanese War and the Chinese Civil War. It was later renamed the North China Military Telecommunications Engineering Institute and moved to Zhangjiakou before permanently relocating to Xi'an in 1958. Throughout the latter half of the 20th century, under the guidance of the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China, it evolved into a comprehensive university, becoming a designated National Key University and a founding member of the prestigious Project 985 initiative.

Academics

The university is organized into numerous schools, including the School of Telecommunications Engineering, the School of Electronic Engineering, and the School of Computer Science and Technology. It offers a wide range of programs leading to bachelor's degree, master's degree, and Doctor of Philosophy qualifications, with particular strength in disciplines like information and communications engineering and cyber security. Xidian consistently ranks highly in national subject assessments conducted by the Chinese Ministry of Education and participates in elite educational alliances such as the Excellence 9.

Campus

The primary campus is located in the Yanta District of Xi'an, near significant historical sites like the Big Wild Goose Pagoda. A newer, larger campus in the Chang'an District houses most undergraduate colleges and features extensive modern facilities. In 2022, the university inaugurated a graduate school campus in Guangzhou, within the Nansha District, as part of a strategic collaboration with the Guangdong Provincial Government. Key campus landmarks include the Comprehensive Building and the University Library.

Research

Xidian University hosts several national-level research institutes, such as the State Key Laboratory of Integrated Services Networks and the Collaborative Innovation Center of Information Sensing and Understanding. It is a leading contributor to major state science projects, including the Chinese Lunar Exploration Program, the Beidou Navigation Satellite System, and the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Telescope. The university's research outputs in fields like artificial intelligence, radar technology, and space science are frequently published in top journals like Nature and Science.

Notable alumni

The university has produced many distinguished figures in science, industry, and government. Prominent scientists and engineers include Wang Zhong, a key contributor to the Chinese space program, and Liu Cungen, an expert in signal processing. In the technology sector, alumni like Zhang Xinsheng, former chairman of ZTE Corporation, and Liu Qiangdong, founder of JD.com, are leading entrepreneurs. Other notable graduates are Yang Hong, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and Li Deren, a renowned photogrammetrist and Twin-star of Chinese Science.
