Their first major performance was opening for The Ramones in Portland, Oregon, which helped establish their local reputation. Frustrated by the limitations of the mainstream music industry, Sage founded Trap Records to maintain creative control, releasing their debut EP, "Is This Real?", in 1978. Their first full-length album, also titled Is This Real?, was released in 1980 on Park Avenue Records and is now considered a classic of the era. The follow-up, Youth of America (1981), featured longer, more expansive tracks and showcased Sage's innovative guitar techniques. After relocating briefly to Phoenix, Arizona, the band recorded Over the Edge (1983), which marked a return to a more direct, aggressive sound. Throughout the 1980s, Wipers toured extensively and released several more albums, including Land of the Lost (1986) and Follow Blind (1987), while facing constant challenges with distribution and label support.
