Nirvana (band). Nirvana was an American rock band formed in Aberdeen, Washington, in 1987. Founded by singer and guitarist Kurt Cobain and bassist Krist Novoselic, the band went through a succession of drummers before recruiting Dave Grohl in 1990. Following Channing's departure, the band recorded the single "Sliver" with Mudhoney drummer Dan Peters before Dave Grohl joined as the permanent drummer in 1990. Signing to the major label DGC Records, Nirvana recorded its breakthrough album, Nevermind, with producer Butch Vig; its lead single, "Smells Like Teen Spirit", became a massive, unexpected hit in late 1991, catapulting the band to international fame. The intense pressure of MTV-driven stardom, combined with Cobain's struggles with heroin addiction and chronic health issues, marked the touring for Nevermind and the subsequent, more abrasive album In Utero (1993), produced by Steve Albini. Nirvana's final concert was in Munich in March 1994; on April 5, 1994, Kurt Cobain was found dead at his home in Seattle from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, leading to the band's dissolution.
