West End Redbacks. The West End Redbacks are the men's professional cricket team representing the state of South Australia in Australian domestic competitions. They compete in the first-class Sheffield Shield and the limited-overs Marsh One-Day Cup, playing their home matches primarily at the historic Adelaide Oval. The team, historically known simply as South Australia, adopted its current moniker in the 1990s through a sponsorship agreement with the South Australian Brewing Company.

History

The team's origins trace back to the formation of the South Australian Cricket Association (SACA) in 1871, with the state first competing in the Sheffield Shield upon its inception in the 1892–93 season. Early stars included legendary batsman Clem Hill and fast bowler George Giffen. The Redbacks endured a long championship drought after their initial Shield triumph in the 1893–94 season, not winning again until the 1995–96 season under the captaincy of Greg Blewett and featuring players like Jason Gillespie and Darren Lehmann. The team has also been a runner-up in the domestic one-day competition on multiple occasions, including in the 2021–22 Marsh One-Day Cup final. Throughout its history, the side has been a crucial pathway for players to represent the Australia national cricket team, producing icons such as Don Bradman, Ian Chappell, and Ricky Ponting.

Home grounds

The primary home venue for the West End Redbacks is the iconic Adelaide Oval, a major Test cricket and sporting venue located in the parklands of North Adelaide. The Oval has undergone significant redevelopment, including the construction of the modern Riverbank Stand. For some matches, particularly in the Marsh One-Day Cup, the team utilizes the Karen Rolton Oval, a dedicated cricket facility named after former Australian women's cricket team captain Karen Rolton. Historically, the team also played matches at the now-demolished Adelaide Oval No. 2 and the Gliderol Stadium in Glenelg.

Players

The squad comprises a mix of experienced domestic veterans and promising young talent, often recruited from local Premier Cricket clubs like Sturt District Cricket Club and Prospect District Cricket Club. Notable current and recent players include captain and batsman Jake Lehmann, son of Darren Lehmann, wicket-keeper Harry Nielsen, and fast bowler Jordan Buckingham. The team has been coached by former Test fast bowler Jason Gillespie. The West End Redbacks' major honour is the Sheffield Shield, which they have won twice, in the 1893–94 and 1995–96 seasons. They have been runners-up in the competition on several other occasions. In the domestic one-day arena, the team has won the title once, claiming the Mercantile Mutual Cup in the 1994–95 season. They have finished as runners-up in the one-day competition multiple times, including in the 2006–07 Ford Ranger Cup and the 2021–22 Marsh One-Day Cup. The team also competes annually in the domestic Twenty20 competition, the Big Bash League, via the Adelaide Strikers franchise.
