History

The station's origins trace back to experimental station W2XB, launched in 1928 by General Electric from its research facility in Schenectady, New York. This was followed by the establishment of W2XAF, which began regular program broadcasts in 1939, making it a pioneer in the NTSC standard. The station's call letters were officially changed to WRGB in 1942, honoring Walter R. G. Baker, a vice president at General Electric. For decades, the station was a flagship property of General Electric Broadcasting, before being sold to Freedom Communications in 1996. After subsequent sales to Clear Channel Communications and later New Vision Television, it was acquired by the Sinclair Broadcast Group in 2012, entering into a shared services agreement with CW affiliate WCWN.

Its digital channel allocation is UHF 35, but it maintains its historic VHF 6 position through PSIP.
