History

The foundation of the university traces its origins to the Indochina University, established in 1906 during the French Indochina period. After the August Revolution and the founding of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, it was reorganized into the University of Hanoi in 1956. Following the Vietnam War and the policy of Đổi Mới, the government merged several prominent institutions, including the University of Hanoi and Hanoi University of Education, to create the current entity through Government Decree 97/CP. This consolidation aimed to enhance resource efficiency and elevate Vietnam's standing in global academia, with subsequent development supported by projects from the World Bank.
