United States men's national basketball team. The team's history began at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, where it won the first Olympic basketball gold medal under coach James Naismith. A pivotal moment occurred at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, with the introduction of the "Dream Team" featuring legends like Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, and Larry Bird, which revolutionized global basketball. At the Olympic Games, its record includes gold medals in 1996, 2000, 2008, 2012, 2016, and 2020, with its sole silver coming at the 1972 Summer Olympics in a controversial final against the Soviet Union. In FIBA's premier tournament, now the FIBA Basketball World Cup, it has won gold at the 1954 FIBA World Championship, 1986 FIBA World Championship, 1994 FIBA World Championship, 2010 FIBA World Championship, and 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup. The team also consistently tops the FIBA Americas Championship, now the FIBA AmeriCup, and has won the Tournament of the Americas multiple times.

The roster has featured the greatest players in basketball history. The historic Dream Team included Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, Charles Barkley, and Karl Malone. Later Olympic cycles saw stars like Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Kevin Durant, and Carmelo Anthony lead the team. Current stalwarts include Stephen Curry, who debuted at the 2010 FIBA World Championship, and Jayson Tatum. Selection is managed by the USA Basketball Men's National Team Committee, often chaired by figures like Jerry Colangelo. Players are chosen from the National Basketball Association and, in some qualifying windows, from overseas leagues like the EuroLeague.

Coaches

The head coaching position has been held by many of the NBA's most respected figures. The first professional coach was Chuck Daly, who led the Dream Team. Notable successors include Lenny Wilkens at the 1996 Summer Olympics, Larry Brown during the 2004 Summer Olympics, and Mike Krzyzewski of Duke University, who served from 2005 to 2016, overseeing three Olympic golds. Gregg Popovich of the San Antonio Spurs took over for the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup and 2020 Summer Olympics.
