United Health Services

United Health Services. It is a major nonprofit healthcare network serving the Southern Tier of New York and northeastern Pennsylvania. Founded in 1981 through the merger of several community hospitals, the system has grown to become a regional leader in integrated care. Its flagship facility is UHS Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City.

History

The origins trace to several community institutions, including Binghamton City Hospital and Charles S. Wilson Memorial Hospital. In 1981, these entities formally consolidated to improve regional healthcare coordination, a move influenced by national trends in hospital network development. Key expansion occurred in 1996 with the acquisition of facilities in Chenango County, notably The Hospital in Sidney. The system later opened the UHS Chenango Memorial Hospital replacement campus in 2014. Further growth included integrating physician practices and outpatient centers across Broome County and Tioga County.

Facilities and operations

The network operates two acute-care hospitals: UHS Wilson Medical Center, a teaching hospital with a Level II Trauma center, and UHS Binghamton General Hospital, which houses a comprehensive behavioral health program. Its community hospital division includes UHS Chenango Memorial Hospital and UHS Delaware Valley Hospital in Walton. The system also manages numerous outpatient facilities, such as the UHS Vestal health center and the UHS Primary Care network. Operations are supported by partnerships with entities like the Mayo Clinic Care Network for specialized clinical consulting.

Services and specialties

It provides a full continuum of care, including emergency services at multiple locations certified by the New York State Department of Health. Key specialties encompass cardiology through the UHS Heart & Vascular Institute, oncology in affiliation with The University of Rochester Medical Center, and neurosurgery. The system features a designated Stroke center and a Regional perinatal center. Behavioral health services are extensive, including inpatient units and the UHS Addiction Treatment Center. Other offerings include orthopedics, rehabilitation at the UHS Rehabilitation Center, and home care via UHS Home Care.

Governance and organization

Governance is overseen by a voluntary Board of directors comprising community leaders from across the Southern Tier. Day-to-day operations are managed by an executive leadership team headed by a President and CEO. The system is organized into distinct service lines, including hospital services, physician practices under UHS Medical Group, and post-acute care. It functions as a key teaching affiliate for clinical rotations from the Upstate Medical University and other programs within the State University of New York system.

Affiliations and partnerships

The network maintains a clinical affiliation with the Mayo Clinic Care Network, allowing access to specialized consultative services. It is a major partner for graduate medical education with Upstate Medical University and collaborates with Binghamton University on nursing and health studies programs. The system also participates in the Empire BlueCross BlueShield provider network and holds memberships in statewide associations like the Healthcare Association of New York State. These relationships support its mission of delivering advanced care within the region.
