Uga (mascot) is the official live mascot of the University of Georgia Bulldogs athletic teams. A lineage of pure white English Bulldogs owned by the Frank W. "Sonny" Seiler family of Savannah, Georgia, the Uga mascots have become iconic symbols within NCAA Division I college football. The dogs are present at all Bulldogs football home games in Sanford Stadium and frequently appear at other university events and SEC championships.

History

The tradition began in 1956 when University of Georgia law student Frank W. "Sonny" Seiler brought his family's English Bulldog, Hood's Ole Dan, to a football game at the request of athletic director Wally Butts. The dog's immediate popularity led to its official designation as the school's mascot, with the name "Uga" a phonetic spelling of the university's initials. Early Ugas, including Uga I and Uga II, solidified the dog's gameday role during the coaching tenure of Vince Dooley. The mascot gained national fame during the 1980 college football season when Uga IV roamed the sidelines as the Bulldogs, led by Herschel Walker, won the 1981 Sugar Bowl and the national championship.

The Uga line represents a continuous pedigree, with each mascot descended from its predecessor. Selection is managed by the Seiler family, who breed and raise the dogs at their home in Savannah, Georgia. The chosen puppy must meet strict criteria for appearance, including a solid white coat, specific jowl structure, and a stocky build characteristic of the English Bulldog breed. Succession is typically ceremonial, with the "crowning" of a new Uga often taking place at a home football game in Sanford Stadium. Notable successors include Uga V, who appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated in 1997, and Uga X, known as "Que," who began his tenure in 2015.

On football gamedays, Uga resides in a custom-built, air-conditioned doghouse on the sidelines near the student section at Sanford Stadium. The mascot wears a patented red jersey with a varsity-style "G" logo and a spiked collar. Traditions include the dog leading the team onto the field and its presence at significant pre-game events like the Dawg Walk. Beyond Athens, Uga has traveled to numerous SEC championship games, CFP semifinals, and major bowl games such as the Rose Bowl and the Sugar Bowl. Uga is widely considered one of the most famous and beloved live mascots in American college athletics, alongside rivals like Auburn Tigers' Aubie and the University of Texas's Bevo. Health and care

Due to the English Bulldog breed's predisposition to brachycephalic syndrome and sensitivity to heat, Uga's health is meticulously managed. The mascot's sideline doghouse is air-conditioned, and handlers limit its exposure during high-temperature games, sometimes using cooling vests.
