History

The airline was formally launched as a subsidiary following the deregulation of the United States airline industry, allowing United Parcel Service greater control over its air network. Prior to this, UPS relied on contracts with carriers like Evergreen International Airlines and Pacific Southwest Airlines. A significant early expansion occurred with the acquisition of several 727 and 747 aircraft from Pan American World Airways. The airline's growth accelerated in the 1990s and 2000s, paralleling the rise of global e-commerce, leading to the massive expansion of its Worldport hub. The airline runs a global hub-and-spoke system with major international hubs at Cologne Bonn Airport in Germany, Hong Kong International Airport, and Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport. It operates a mix of scheduled overnight domestic flights within North America and extensive international routes to Europe, Asia, and Latin America. The airline is a key participant in the UPS Next Day Air and UPS Worldwide Express service guarantees, coordinating closely with the ground operations of United Parcel Service.

The fuselage is painted in the trademark "Pullman Brown" with a wide tan cheatline running along the windows. The company name "UPS" is displayed in large white letters on the forward fuselage, and the tail features a prominent golden shield logo on a brown background. Accidents and incidents

The airline has maintained a strong safety record throughout its history. One of the most significant accidents was the crash of a DC-8-71F near Birmingham–Shuttlesworth International Airport in 2013, which resulted in fatalities and an investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board. Another notable incident involved a 747-100SF that crashed shortly after takeoff from Dubai International Airport in 2010, leading to a total hull loss. These events have contributed to ongoing safety reviews and enhancements in pilot training and operational procedures in coordination with the Federal Aviation Administration.
