The death of Margaret, Maid of Norway in 1290 created a succession crisis for the Scottish crown, leading to the intervention of Edward I of England as arbitrator in the Great Cause. Edward used his position to extract oaths of fealty from the competing claimants, including John Balliol and Robert de Brus, 5th Lord of Annandale. After selecting Balliol in 1292, Edward persistently undermined his authority, treating Scotland as a feudal vassal.
