Santa Anita Park is a premier Thoroughbred horse racing facility located in Arcadia, California. It opened on Christmas Day in 1934 and is renowned for its scenic backdrop against the San Gabriel Mountains. The track hosts some of the most significant races in North American horse racing, including the Santa Anita Derby and the Breeders' Cup World Championships on multiple occasions. Operated by 1/ST Racing and owned by The Stronach Group, it is a cornerstone of Southern California's sporting culture.

History

The land was originally part of the Rancho Santa Anita, a Spanish land grant. Entrepreneur Charles H. Strub, with backing from film mogul Hal Roach and other Hollywood figures, developed the modern racing facility during the Great Depression. Its inaugural meeting was a major social and sporting success. During World War II, the site was used as the Santa Anita Assembly Center, a temporary detention camp for Japanese Americans under the War Relocation Authority. Racing resumed after the war, and the track underwent significant renovations, including the installation of California's first synthetic racing surface, Cushion Track, in 2007, later replaced by a dirt track. Throughout its history, it has been a central venue in the careers of legendary trainers like Charlie Whittingham and jockeys such as Bill Shoemaker and Laffit Pincay Jr..

The track's major meet is the winter-spring season, which features the prestigious Santa Anita Handicap, one of the first races to offer a $100,000 purse. The spring meeting is highlighted by the Santa Anita Derby, a key prep race for the Kentucky Derby. Santa Anita has hosted the Breeders' Cup World Championships numerous times, first in 1986 and most recently in 2023. Other significant graded stakes races held annually include the Vanity Mile, the Charles Whittingham Stakes, and the Malibu Stakes. The autumn meet includes the Autumn Meet stakes program, which serves as a prep for the Breeders' Cup.

Many champions have raced here, including the legendary Seabiscuit, who won the 1940 Santa Anita Handicap in a dramatic victory. John Henry, a two-time Horse of the Year, won multiple editions of the Santa Anita Handicap and the Charles Whittingham Stakes. The great Spectacular Bid set a world record on the track in 1980. More recently, superstars like American Pharoah, the first Triple Crown winner in 37 years, and Flightline, an undefeated champion, have delivered electrifying performances. The track has also been the site of historic riding milestones, including Laffit Pincay Jr.'s record-breaking 9,000th win.

The park's iconic appearance has made it a frequent filming location for movies and television. It served as a primary setting for the 2003 film Seabiscuit, which dramatized the famous horse's career. Scenes from classics like A Day at the Races by the Marx Brothers and The Sting were filmed on the grounds. It has been featured in episodes of television series such as Modern Family and Beverly Hills, 90210. The track's ambiance and history have also been referenced in songs and literature, cementing its status as a cultural landmark beyond the sport of horse racing.
