Plot

In the aftermath of the Clone Wars, the Galactic Empire consolidates power under Emperor Palpatine. Scientist Galen Erso is coerced by Orson Krennic, director of the Imperial Military's Advanced Weapons Research, to complete the Death Star, a planet-destroying superweapon. Years later, Galen's daughter, Jyn Erso, is rescued from an Imperial detention center by Saw Gerrera and the Rebel Alliance. The Rebels learn from a defecting Imperial pilot, Bodhi Rook, that Galen has secretly built a vulnerability into the Death Star. Jyn leads a team, including intelligence officer Cassian Andor, the blind spiritual warrior Chirrut Îmwe, his protector Baze Malbus, and the droid K-2SO, to the Imperial archive on Scarif to steal the plans. The mission culminates in a massive battle involving the Rebel fleet and Imperial Navy, where the team transmits the plans to the Rebel flagship Tantive IV at the cost of their own lives.

Production

Development began under Walt Disney Studios after Disney's acquisition of Lucasfilm in 2012. Originally conceived by John Knoll, the chief creative officer of Industrial Light & Magic, the film underwent significant reshoots in mid-2016, with Tony Gilroy contributing extensive rewrites and overseeing additional photography. Director Gareth Edwards utilized extensive location shooting across the United Kingdom, Iceland, the Maldives, and Jordan. Key visual effects were created by Industrial Light & Magic, with Greig Fraser serving as cinematographer. The score was composed by Michael Giacchino, replacing the original composer Alexandre Desplat due to scheduling conflicts from the reshoots.

Release

The world premiere was held at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles on December 10, 2016. It was released theatrically in the United States on December 16, 2016, by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. The film was accompanied by an extensive marketing campaign and was released in IMAX, 3D, and conventional formats. It was later released on Digital HD, Blu-ray, and DVD in early 2017, including additional scenes that expanded on the film's opening.
