Richmond County, Georgia is a county located in the U.S. state of Georgia along the Savannah River. Its county seat and only incorporated municipality is the consolidated city-county of Augusta. Established in 1777 from the colonial Parish of St. Paul, it is one of Georgia's original counties and was named for Charles Lennox, 3rd Duke of Richmond, a British statesman sympathetic to the American Revolution. The county is a central component of the Augusta metropolitan area and is historically significant for its role in the South's development, from the antebellum period through its contributions to World War II industry and modern Fort Gordon.

History

The area was originally inhabited by the Muscogee and Yuchi peoples before European settlement. In 1736, James Oglethorpe established the settlement of Augusta as a trading post, which later became a strategic location during the American Revolutionary War and the site of the Battle of Augusta. The county's formation was part of Georgia's first land distribution following the Declaration of Independence. During the antebellum era, the county's economy was dominated by cotton cultivation, facilitated by the Augusta Canal and slave labor, with Augusta becoming a major inland market. The American Civil War saw the establishment of the Confederate Augusta Powder Works, a major supplier for the Army of Northern Virginia. Major geographic features include the Augusta Canal and the Phinizy Swamp Nature Park. It is bordered by McDuffie County to the north, Burke County to the south, and Columbia County to the east across the river. The city of Hephzibah is a major unincorporated community.

Demographics

As of the 2020 United States Census, the population was 206,607. The racial makeup was approximately 55.1% African American, 37.2% White American, 2.3% Asian American, and 3.2% identifying as two or more races. Hispanic and Latino Americans of any race comprised 5.8% of the population. The population density was about 638 people per square mile. Major ancestry groups include English American, German American, and Irish American. The median household income was around $49,000, with about 20% of the population living below the poverty line. The Augusta metropolitan area has seen steady growth, influenced by the presence of Fort Gordon and the Medical College of Georgia.

Government and infrastructure

Richmond County operates under a consolidated government with the city of Augusta, known as the Augusta-Richmond County government, led by a mayor and a ten-member Augusta Commission. The county is part of Georgia's 12th congressional district, represented in the U.S. House.
