Phạm Minh Chính

Phạm Minh Chính is a Vietnamese politician and former Lieutenant General in the Ministry of Public Security who has served as the Prime Minister of Vietnam since April 2021. A member of the Politburo and the Secretariat of the Communist Party of Vietnam, he was elected by the National Assembly of Vietnam following the 13th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam. His tenure has focused on steering the country's recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic in Vietnam and advancing major infrastructure projects.

Early life and education

He was born on 10 December 1958 in Hậu Lộc District, Thanh Hóa province, within the former North Vietnam. He joined the Communist Party of Vietnam in 1986, marking the beginning of his formal political life. For his higher education, he graduated from the People's Security Academy and later earned a doctorate in law. He also undertook advanced political theory training at the prestigious Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics, a common path for senior party cadres.

Career in public security

His professional career was primarily within the state security apparatus, where he rose through the ranks of the Ministry of Public Security. He served in various significant roles, including as Deputy Director of the General Department of Intelligence. His political ascent accelerated with his appointment as the Party Secretary of Quảng Ninh province in 2010, where he oversaw economic development in a key region bordering China. He was elected Prime Minister of Vietnam by the National Assembly of Vietnam on 5 April 2021, succeeding Nguyễn Xuân Phúc. His administration immediately confronted severe waves of the COVID-19 pandemic in Vietnam, implementing strict containment measures and overseeing a large-scale vaccination campaign.
