Paris, France. The capital and most populous city of France, it is situated on the Seine river in the north-central part of the country. Often called the "City of Light," it is a global center for art, fashion, gastronomy, and culture, and is one of the world's leading business and financial centers. Its metropolitan area is a primary rail, highway, and air transport hub, served by two international airports, Charles de Gaulle Airport and Orly Airport.

History

The site has been continuously inhabited since at least the 3rd century BC by the Gallic tribe known as the Parisii, who gave the city its name. Conquered by the Romans in 52 BC and renamed Lutetia, it became a significant regional center. Following the fall of the Western Roman Empire, it was the capital of the Frankish Kingdom of the Franks under Clovis I. The city grew in prominence during the Middle Ages as a center of learning and commerce, with the founding of the University of Paris in the 12th century. It was the epicenter of major historical events including the Hundred Years' War, the French Wars of Religion, and the French Revolution, which saw the Storming of the Bastille in 1789. The 19th century under Napoleon I and Napoleon III transformed its urban landscape through the grand projects of Baron Haussmann. It endured the Siege of Paris and the Paris Commune, and was occupied by German forces during World War II before its liberation in 1944 by the Free French Forces and Allied troops.

Geography

Located in the Île-de-France region, the city core is built on a bend of the Seine, which divides it into the Rive Gauche and Rive Droite. The city's topography is relatively flat, with the highest point being Montmartre at 130 meters. The Bois de Boulogne and the Bois de Vincennes are its major western and eastern green spaces, respectively. The metropolitan area extends far beyond the Boulevard Périphérique ring road, encompassing numerous communes in the Petite Couronne and Grande Couronne. The region's climate is classified as Oceanic, influenced by the North Atlantic Current.
