Old Main (Augustana College). Old Main is the historic and administrative heart of Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois. History

The construction of Old Main was a pivotal moment for Augustana College, which was originally founded in 1860 by Swedish Lutheran immigrants as Augustana College and Theological Seminary. The college relocated from Paxton, Illinois to the Quad Cities region in 1875, initially occupying temporary facilities. The decision to build a permanent, defining structure was led by college president Gustav Andreen, who championed the move to a new campus on the bluffs of the Mississippi River. The cornerstone was laid in 1904, with the building opening for the 1905 academic year, consolidating classrooms, laboratories, a library, and administrative functions under one roof. Its completion coincided with a period of significant growth for the college and the broader Swedish American community in the Midwestern United States.

Architecture

Old Main is a prime example of early 20th-century Collegiate Gothic architecture, a style popularized by institutions like The University of Chicago and Princeton University to evoke the tradition of Oxbridge colleges. Architect Charles A. Gombert designed the structure using locally sourced limestone, featuring characteristic elements such as pointed arch windows, crenellated parapets, and a prominent central tower. The symmetrical facade and vertical emphasis create an imposing yet scholarly presence on the campus landscape. The design intentionally contrasted with the earlier, more utilitarian buildings of the college, aiming to project permanence, academic rigor, and a connection to European educational heritage.

Campus role

Since its opening, Old Main has functioned as the central nerve center of Augustana College. It originally housed nearly all of the college's operations, including the departments of natural sciences, classical languages, and Theology. Today, it remains the primary administrative building, containing the offices of the President, the Provost, the Dean of the College, and other key administrators. It also hosts important ceremonial spaces, such as the Gustav Andreen Board Room, and serves as a daily passageway for students, faculty, and staff, reinforcing its role as the symbolic and physical crossroads of the campus community.

Renovations and preservation

Throughout its history, Old Main has undergone several renovations to modernize infrastructure while preserving its historic character. A major renovation in the late 1950s updated electrical and plumbing systems. The most comprehensive restoration project occurred from 1996 to 1998, led by the architectural firm Holabird & Root. This multimillion-dollar effort included seismic retrofitting, the installation of modern HVAC systems, asbestos abatement, and the meticulous restoration of original woodwork, stained glass, and limestone exteriors. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979, ensuring its protection and recognizing its significance to the architectural and educational history of Illinois.

Notable features

Notable features of Old Main include its iconic central bell tower, which houses the original Meneely Bell cast by the Meneely Bell Company of Troy, New York. The building's main entrance opens into a grand staircase and vaulted lobby area. The Carnegie-funded library, originally located on the third floor, featured ornate woodcarvings and a distinctive fireplace, remnants of which are still visible. Several stained-glass windows, including one dedicated to Martin Luther, adorn the interior. The building also contains memorial plaques honoring significant figures in the college's history, such as Gustav Andreen and Conrad Bergendoff.
