North Augusta, South Carolina is a city located in Aiken County along the Savannah River, directly across from Augusta, Georgia. Incorporated in 1906, it is a principal city of the Augusta metropolitan area and is known for its scenic riverfront and significant residential growth. The city has developed a distinct identity through major projects like the SRP Park baseball stadium and its nationally recognized Riverview Park Activities Center.

History

The area's history is deeply tied to the Savannah River and early colonial transportation, with the Hammond's Ferry crossing operating in the 18th century. Following the American Civil War, the land was part of the Hammond's Ferry Plantation owned by James U. Jackson, a prominent Augusta, Georgia businessman. Jackson envisioned a modern planned community and, with the Hamburg community devastated by the Great Flood of 1888, he founded the North Augusta Land Company in 1890. The city was officially incorporated in 1906, with early growth fueled by the Augusta Canal and its status as a winter resort for northern visitors. The 20th century saw expansion with the construction of the Jefferson Davis Highway bridge and the establishment of the Savannah River Site, which spurred significant suburban development.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 22.50 square miles, of which 21.60 square miles is land and 0.90 square miles is water. It is situated on the northern bank of the Savannah River, which forms the border with Georgia and Richmond County. The city's topography ranges from river floodplains to rolling uplands, and it is part of the Upper Atlantic Coastal Plain. Major waterways include Butler Creek, and the city is connected to Augusta, Georgia by several bridges, including the James U. Jackson Memorial Bridge.

Demographics

As of the 2020 United States Census, the population was 24,379. The racial makeup was 70.8% White, 20.5% African American, 0.3% Native American, 1.8% Asian, and 4.2% identifying as two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.8% of the population. The population density was 1,128.7 inhabitants per square mile. The median household income was $71,563, and the per capita income was $35,179. Approximately 8.5% of the population lived below the poverty line.

Economy

The economy is closely linked to the broader Augusta regional economy, with a strong base in healthcare, retail, and professional services. Major employers include the Savannah River Site, managed by contractors like Savannah River Nuclear Solutions, and the University Health Care System. The city provides full public services, including a police department, fire department, and public works. It is part of South Carolina's 2nd congressional district, represented in the U.S. House by Joe Wilson.

The city is renowned for its extensive park system along the Savannah River, centered around the North Augusta Greeneway, a 7-mile paved trail. The crown jewel is SRP Park, a state-of-the-art baseball facility that also hosts concerts and community events.
