National Institute of Design

History

The genesis of the institute can be traced to the 1958 Eames Report, officially titled *The India Report*, prepared by renowned American designers Charles Eames and Ray Eames at the invitation of the Government of India. This report recommended the establishment of a national design institute to support Indian industry. Following this, the institute was formally established in 1961 in Ahmedabad, with initial guidance from the Ford Foundation and notable figures like Gautam Sarabhai and Gira Sarabhai. Its early development was also supported by the Sarabhai family and the Kasturbhai Lalbhai Group. The institute played a pivotal role in the nation's post-independence industrial growth, collaborating with entities like the Nehruvian government, the Khadi and Village Industries Commission, and the State Trading Corporation of India.

Campuses

The institute operates from multiple campuses across India, with its founding and main campus located in Paldi, Ahmedabad. This campus houses the majority of its academic programs and facilities. A second major campus was established in Gandhinagar, also in Gujarat, to accommodate expanding student intake. Further expansion led to the creation of satellite campuses in Bengaluru in Karnataka and Kurukshetra in Haryana, broadening its geographical and educational reach. These campuses are integral to its mission of disseminating design education nationally and are recognized by the Government of India as Institutes of National Importance.
