Nadeem Anjum

Nadeem Anjum is a senior Pakistan Army officer who currently serves as the Director-General of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), having been appointed to the position in November 2021. A career infantry officer from the Baloch Regiment, he has held significant command and staff positions, including commanding the X Corps in Rawalpindi. Early life and education

Nadeem Anjum was born in Multan, Punjab. He joined the Pakistan Military Academy in Kakul and was commissioned into the Pakistan Army in 1988, graduating with the 76th Long Course. He is a graduate of the prestigious Command and Staff College in Quetta and later attended the National Defence University in Islamabad. His military education also includes specialized courses at the Royal College of Defence Studies in the United Kingdom.

Military career

Upon commissioning, Anjum was posted to the Baloch Regiment. He has served in various command and staff appointments across the country, including postings in Azad Kashmir and the restive Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. He commanded an infantry brigade during operations in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas and later served as the Inspector General of the Frontier Corps in Balochistan. He was promoted to the rank of lieutenant general in 2019 and appointed as the Commander of the X Corps, one of the army's most strategically important formations headquartered in Rawalpindi, overseeing security for the capital region and parts of Kashmir.

Director-General of Inter-Services Intelligence

In November 2021, Nadeem Anjum was appointed as the Director-General of the Inter-Services Intelligence, succeeding Lt. Gen. Faiz Hameed. His appointment was confirmed by the Prime Minister's Office after consultation with the Chief of Army Staff, General Qamar Javed Bajwa. His tenure has involved managing the agency's critical role in the Afghan peace process following the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan. He has also overseen the ISI's efforts in counter-terrorism operations against groups like the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan and in addressing internal security threats, while engaging with international counterparts including the Central Intelligence Agency and MI6.

Awards and decorations

For his distinguished service, Nadeem Anjum has been awarded the Hilal-e-Imtiaz (Military) by the Government of Pakistan. He is also a recipient of the Tamgha-e-Basalat and the Tamgha-e-Diffa. His service medals include the General Service Medal, the Tamgha-e-Baqa, and the Tamgha-e-Azmat-e-Sanad.
