Mike Garrett

Mike Garrett is a former American football running back and collegiate athletics administrator, best known for winning the Heisman Trophy as a star for the USC Trojans and later helping the Kansas City Chiefs win Super Bowl IV. Early life and education

Garrett was born and raised in the Boyle Heights neighborhood of Los Angeles, California. In 1965, he enjoyed a spectacular season, rushing for 1,440 yards and leading the nation in scoring, which culminated in him being awarded the Heisman Trophy. That same year, he also received the Maxwell Award and the Walter Camp Award, and was recognized as a Unanimous All-American. His career rushing total of 3,221 yards set a new NCAA record at the time and cemented his legacy as a college football legend.

Professional football career

Selected in the second round of the 1966 NFL/AFL draft by the AFL's Kansas City Chiefs, Garrett immediately made an impact, earning AFL Rookie of the Year honors. He played a vital role for the Kansas City Chiefs under coach Hank Stram, contributing as both a runner and a receiver out of the backfield. His most significant professional achievement came in Super Bowl IV, where he scored a touchdown in the Chiefs' victory over the Minnesota Vikings. He finished his professional career with the San Diego Chargers, playing his final three seasons in the NFL before retiring in 1973.

Post-playing career and honors

After retiring, Garrett earned a Juris Doctor degree from Western State College of Law and worked in private business. He returned to USC in 1993, serving as the athletic director for 17 years. During his tenure, the University of Southern California won numerous NCAA team championships across various sports, most notably in football under coach Pete Carroll.
