The original London and North Eastern Railway was one of the "Big Four" companies formed during the 1923 Grouping and was nationalised into British Railways in 1948. These bi-mode and electric trains are replacing the older InterCity 125 and InterCity 225 sets to increase capacity, improve reliability, and reduce journey times. The company also operates a dedicated fleet for its premium Azuma services and maintains its trains at depots in Bounds Green, Doncaster, and Neville Hill.
